SNAKE EYES IS THE ONLY ONE IN THIS WEEK'S PAPER WHO HASN'T TALKED ABOUT IT

On loan from the Imaginarium, a battle portrait in which the artist fights beside two ninjas, one of whom never says a word.

Meesh and the Joes, from the Imaginarium. Cobra's helmets lie at their feet. Nobody in the picture has mentioned it to anyone.

The Gallery borrows Meesh and the Joes from the Imaginarium this week: Mr. Samman in combat gear between Snake Eyes, in black, and Storm Shadow, in white, with the smoke of a won battle behind them and a pile of Cobra helmets at their feet.

Readers of the front page, where a man breaks the first rule of a famous club by writing about it, have noticed that Snake Eyes is the one figure in the paper this week who has kept quiet. "He hasn't said a word in forty years," said Esther Egg of the Nerd Panel. "He's the only member in good standing."

Critics are more interested in the man in white. Storm Shadow, longtime fans will know, is the sworn brother who might be an enemy or an ally, depending on the decade. "Everyone has one," said a docent. "The figure beside you who looks like freedom. You don't have to fight him. You have to know which side he's on today."

The Gallery has added a small plaque under the frame with the line every child of the eighties can recite at the end of a cartoon. Now you know. And knowing, staff remind visitors, is half the battle. The other half is what you do on the second viewing.
