POP-ART PORTRAIT IS ALL YELLOW AND VOLUME; CURATORS POINT TO THE QUIET PART
From the Sketchbook: two figures in caps and sunglasses, printed in colours that could introduce themselves at a party.
Curator, The Spoiler Alert
The Gallery borrows Two in Pop Art from the Sketchbook: a screen-print-style portrait of two people side by side in caps and sunglasses, against a yellow so bright that visitors have been seen putting on sunglasses of their own.
It hangs in the week the front page covers a family introduction ("a big Hollywood actor and comedian"), delivered with real pride, and the quiet phone that followed. Visitors have been comparing the two. "Pop art is loud love," said a docent. "Big colour, bold outline, everyone in the room can see it. That's not a criticism. Sometimes loud is how love gets built."
Curators ask people to look past the colours. The second figure, who has asked not to be identified, is not posing, and neither is the artist. They are simply standing close, the way people do when nobody is introducing them. "That's the part you'd keep," said Esther Egg. "Not the yellow. The distance. There isn't any."
A famous New York printmaker once predicted everyone would be famous for fifteen minutes. The Gallery would like to add that everyone deserves a phone call in the sixteenth.
